We handle the logistics of both temporary agency and permanent work placements so you can focus on what matters most: finding reliable people for your business.
Inclusive hiring does not need to be complicated. At Liberatus, we make the process clear and straightforward by connecting you with candidates through trusted referrals and verified references. Our role is to coordinate, not to replace the expertise of those who know the criminal justice system best.
"We are a family run business and believe in second chances. We found Liberatus to be friendly, effective and efficient. From the initial contact through to post onboarding they were supportive to both us and the candidate."
— HR Manager, Beamglow

Hiring individuals with convictions can feel unfamiliar, but with the right support it is straightforward. With the right structures in place, it is simple and highly rewarding. We encourage hirers to approach inclusive hiring with three principles:
Focus on skills, reliability, and attitude. A conviction should not define what a candidate can contribute to your workplace.
We work closely with partners in the Criminal Justice sector who are experts at supporting people in employment. Our dedicated partner coordinators are there to support you and our candidates throughout their work placement, ensuring each placement has the best chance for success as possible.
Most candidates need only a fair chance and a clear induction. When additional support is required, we signpost to the specialists who are best placed to provide it. Make sure to communicate your feedback and challenges with the team at Liberatus, who will be able to support wherever necessary.
Common questions from hirers about partnering with Liberatus
Getting started is simple. Contact us via our website or by phone to register your interest. We'll provide our standard terms of business and begin matching candidates as soon as you notify us of a vacancy. You'll receive a selection of candidate profiles and can choose to either conduct brief interviews or review CVs and make your selection directly. Once you've confirmed your preferred candidate, we'll handle the final arrangements and the placement can begin. From your perspective, the process is as straightforward as working with any recruitment or temporary staffing agency—enhanced by the added benefit of meaningful social impact. Our team remains available throughout to support you with any questions or adjustments.
Yes. We thoroughly risk-assess every worker through our trusted referral network which includes probation officers, prison employment leads, charities, and other support professionals. Each candidate is evaluated not just on their criminal record, but on their skills, attitude, and readiness for work, with input from those who know them best. We only place individuals who are motivated to change and do not pose an unacceptable risk. By the time they reach you, they have chosen to be in our program and have been vouched for by professionals, making them highly committed and diligent—especially around safety and workplace standards. Where needed, we can arrange additional screening for sensitive roles. In short, hiring through Liberatus means accessing carefully vetted, supported, and motivated workers.
Please inform us immediately of any issues and we will address them promptly. For Liberatus agency workers, we can end or replace the worker if needed, in line with agreed terms. We encourage open feedback, as most minor issues can be resolved through conversation, but we will step in if necessary. Our team also checks in regularly to identify concerns early, and you can rate the worker's performance through our feedback system. Your operation's continuity and safety are our priority. Experience across the UK shows that most individuals hired are reliable and productive, but we remain ready to act quickly to ensure a positive outcome.
Liberatus manages all compliance and mandatory checks, including right-to-work verification and comprehensive risk assessments carried out through our trusted referral network. Our candidates are referred by established professionals—such as probation officers, prison employment leads, charities, and support workers—who can vouch for their suitability. Based on these referrals, we undertake thorough risk assessments while ensuring full compliance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. This means that if a conviction is spent and not relevant to the role, it will neither be disclosed nor taken into consideration. During the temporary agency placement period, we take care of all administrative responsibilities, including payroll, tax, and National Insurance. You simply settle a monthly invoice. Where roles require additional or industry-specific background checks, these can be arranged on a case-by-case basis.
Absolutely. There is no upfront cost to engage with us – signing up as a hirer partner is free. The only cost occurs when you actually take a worker on assignment, and that cost is simply the hourly rate for the work. Because our mission has a social purpose, we are not charging exorbitant margins. We handle advertising, screening, multiple interviews, etc., so you don't have to. For a small business, that time saved is money saved. We can discuss specific hourly rates when you approach us with a role which will depend on the job's market rate. No long-term contracts either – you can use one Liberatus placement or twenty, as needed.
We focus on entry-level to mid-level roles that can be filled by individuals coming out of prison or with an offending history. This includes a wide range of sectors: warehouse staff, cleaners, construction labourers, hospitality workers, retail assistants, delivery drivers, admin or call-centre staff, and so on. Many candidates have skills from before or have gained trade skills inside prison. We try to align those skills with hirers' needs. If you have a very specialized role, we can discuss whether our candidate pool might have someone suitable; if not, we'll be honest. We also take into account each candidate's risk assessment and background.
As standard, we do not register candidates with convictions for sexual offences, arson, or terrorism. You can add particular crime types to that exclusion if you wish.
As standard, we do not disclose specific information about offence history. We conduct robust risk assessments and develop granular risk mitigation strategies based on those assessments. These go far beyond what can be gleaned from a DBS Certificate. Government guidelines suggest that a candidate must share details of all unspent criminal records if asked. If you request this information we can share a written Disclosure Statement from the candidate with you.
We believe that people achieve amazing things when given the opportunity to meet their potential. We work with employers who share the same belief. Research shows that prison leavers excel in work performance, they remain loyal and are motivated to succeed. We have found that ex-offenders have obtained highly relevant qualifications, certificates and work experience during their time in custody.
