Referrals and References

There are two ways to join Liberatus:

1. Referral through a partner

You can be referred by someone who already works with you, such as a probation officer, PEL, work coach, or another charity partner. If you come through this route, your referral acts as your reference.

2. Direct application

You can also apply to us directly through our website. If you choose this route, you need to provide a reference from someone who knows you in a professional or supervisory capacity, such as a mentor, former employer, or probation officer.

Note we do not register candidates with convictions for sexual offences, arson, or terrorism

References and referrals are an important part of our process. They help us place you with the right employer and make sure your work opportunities are safe, suitable, and supportive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from candidates about joining Liberatus

Click the button labelled 'Join our Talent Pool' to get started. The process is straightforward and quick and you will be able to speak to our team at any point if there are issues. The key thing to note is you will need someone from an established organisation to refer you - this might be your probation worker, PEL, or someone who may be supporting you from a charity.

We may reach out to speak to you, but not like a normal interview. It will be to understand a bit more about you so we can do our best job to understand your needs and match you with the right employment opportunities.

Taking a job with Liberatus does not automatically stop your benefits – but your Universal Credit (UC) or other benefits may be adjusted based on what you earn. Many candidates initially decide to work less than 16 hours per week to continue claiming UC but it is up to you and we give you the flexibility to find what works for you. You can read more about Universal Credit here.

Normally no. After sharing information about your conviction with Liberatus, they will handle any legally required disclosure in confidence, allowing you to focus on your job. We only share relevant information with employers on a need to know basis. If you have concerns, speak to our Criminal Justice Lead who will be able to talk you through our disclosure process.

Liberatus offers a range of temporary job placements across many industries. We work with employers in logistics, construction, hospitality, warehouses, facilities management, manufacturing, retail, and more. These could be roles like warehouse operative, kitchen assistant, construction labourer, cleaner, driver's mate, admin assistant – it depends on what jobs our employer partners need to fill at any given time. We match roles to your skills, qualifications, and aspirations. Our goal is to find you work that you're comfortable with and capable of doing well, so you and the employer both benefit. As we grow, the variety of jobs will grow too. And remember, a temporary placement can turn into a permanent position if you impress the employer.

A Liberatus placement can last anywhere from a few days up to three months in the same role. When the placement ends, you remain in the Liberatus talent pool, and we'll look to place you in another assignment. Each completed placement is a stepping stone. You might try a different type of role next, to broaden your skills. In some cases, employers extend the placement or ask you back later when a position opens. There's no guarantee of that, but we do see repeat requests for good workers. On the other hand, if you've done well and the employer has a staffing need, they can offer you a permanent job. At that point, you would stop being a Liberatus agency worker and would be hired directly by the company. We love to celebrate these success stories.

Not unless you choose to tell them. There may be one or two people at the company (perhaps HR or a department manager) who know that a given worker has come through a justice-back-to-work program, but it's usually on a need-to-know basis. It's your personal decision if you eventually share your background with colleagues. On the ground, you're integrated with the company's team. If anyone asks, you can just say "I'm working with the company through an agency." That's true and sufficient.

After three months, an employer may want to offer you a permanent job. At that point, you would stop being a Liberatus agency worker and be employed directly by the company. Although we're sad to see our candidates move on, we see this as a great success as you move towards long term employment.

We understand that sometimes people with convictions may face additional barriers when starting work. Liberatus works with partners who are experts at supporting people with convictions into and throughout employment, this means that should you need additional support, we will be able to signpost you to some excellent organisations who would love to help. You will have a dedicated account manager at Liberatus who is your point of contact and able to discuss any support needs you have.

Unfortunately some license conditions can make it difficult for people to find work. In this circumstance, we will aim to work around your conditions and find opportunities that are suitable, and may even be able to work with your probation to ease some of those restrictions if it means you will be better able to succeed in a work placement.
